Doors are an opening for us to step into a new type of experience or explore a new way to live.

Interview

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a first year college student who is interested in graphic design but looking into the trades

How much experience do you have with collage?

Quite a bit because it is one of my favorite kinds of art. I used to scrapbook a lot for fun which helped me see a vision for my collages.

Collage artists tend to be picky when it comes to their source material. Can you talk about your approach for selecting your images and/or publications?

All of my source materials came from National Geo Magazines because they have such gorgeous photos and such a variety of colors.

Were there any large themes you intended to explore or unpack before you began with this series of work? Did you stay on theme, or did things change as you began physically cutting and pasting images?

I went with a general theme of how everyone sees the world and made sure it wasn’t just my views.

How did your background and life experiences inform your collages?

When finding inspo, I remembered my brother doing a school project about doors and starting thinking about viewing life like that instead of windows like normal. Doors are an opening for us to step into a new type of experience or explore a new way to live. When I go from one part of life to another, I imagine the pathway of doors I walk through every day.

What was your environment and set-up like when making the work? Did you listen to music? Did you work in isolation, or were you surrounded by distraction? Do you think this influenced the work you made?

I worked at a small art desk in the corner of my room. This is where I keep all of my stickers, paper scraps, tape and magazines that I used in these collages. I would watch youtube videos, like people explaining video game lore or movie reviews I’ve seen before. I think having no distracts helped me get in the mindset to put together the different doors right.

Scissors or X-Acto?

Mix of both but mostly scissors

Was there anything unexpected that emerged while creating your work? Any new epiphanies?

Just a lot of people loved the doors and were able to understand my vision which meant a lot.

Looking at your work again, has your understanding of your collages changed over time? Has any hidden meaning emerged?

I think they can mean a little different things for everyone and I hope they can be timeless.
